Victory for Epaillard in the Grand Prix Iberia

French rider wins the most important event at the CSI 3* International Jumping Competition in San Sebastian, following a thrilling second round.

Julien Epaillard of France on Saturday afternoon won the Iberia Airlines Grand Prix, the most important event at the CSI 3* International Jumping Competition of San Sebastian, after a thrilling second round, in which seventeen competitors took part.

Epaillard rode last in the competition, and, aboard Lord du Janlie, was able to complete his round without committing a fault. He also did so in less time than the Team World Champion, Piet Raymakers of Holland, riding before an audience that had been cheering him on from the earlier events. And so, after winning the first Long Tour competition, Raymakers came in second place, riding Van Schijndel’s Now or Never, which earned him the Gipuzkoa Cup.

Of the seventeen competitors qualifying for the second round (all with no faults) only five could repeat that result in their second runs. In addition to Epaillard and Raymakers, Sergio Álvarez Moya of Austurias (Wisconsin III), Ismael García Roque of the Canary Islands (Gold Edition) and Robert Hoekstra of Great Britain (Rancorrado) were the other riders who accomplished the double zero, making up the remaining classification slots.
