Fiesta of San Sebastian in Costa Adeje (video)

Every 20th January to celebrate the fiesta of San Sebastian the local people from Adeje bring their horses and pets to be blessed and then take them to swim at the beach of La Enramada in La Caleta.

This tradition goes back to the end of the 18th century. It is seen as a way to protect their animals from pests and epidemics.

This event has been attended by up to 30,000 pilgrims and tourists in the last few years, and being situated in the midst of the hotel and resort area of Costa Adeje has become a major attraction for visitors as well as the local people.
