Lanaken: FEI World Breeding Jumping Championships for Young Horses

The FEI World Breeding Jumping Championships for Young Horses had an unlucky start yesterday. Rain and drizzle came poring down all day, fortunately the footing and other circumstances at the Zangersheide Stud are perfect, problems didn’t go any further than dirty boots and wet suits. Horses of 5, 6 and 7 years have to jump two classes on Thursday and Friday to qualify for the final on Sunday. Competition is tough in Lanaken, one mistake in either of the qualifying classes normally stands in the way of competing in the final. In order to prevent the Championships from being too demanding, the 5- and 6-year olds only had to do one round today. No less than 101 faultless 5 year olds (out of 195 horses) still stand a chance to make it to the final on Sunday. The 6 year old class was a little more difficult. 75 out of 187 6 year old horses stayed completely clear, 13 horses had time penalties. The 7 year olds were the only class with a jump off. A Dutch horse and a Belgian rider formed the winning combination. In a jump off containing 65 combinations Vincent Lambrecht really had to push blood type Titus (Lancelot x Rex Magna xx) to the limits. 32 horses managed to stay clear for the second time, so time really made the difference. Second placed Pénélope Leprevost, riding the French state owned stallion My Lord Carthago HN, was only 0.03 of a second ‘slower’. Dutch breeding did well today in the 7-year old group. Of the best 20 horses 6 were bred with the KWPN. Selle Français was successful, having produced both second and third placed horse. Mélodie Ardente, ridden by Simon Delestre, is by Apache d’Adriers and – as Lord Carthago HN – has Jalisco B as dam sire. Carthago was well represented. My Lord Carthago had a half sibling in 5th place (VDL Groep Cannelina, ridden by Leopold van Asten). Number 6 VDL Groep Quinara (Quinar x Carthago) and number 9 Chuck Z (Champion du Lys x Carthago) also descend from Jos Lansink’s Olympic mount. Champion du Lys also did a good job, producing a second horse in the top 10. Bastian Freese’s number 10 placed horse Caballero is sired by Champion du Lys, Luder Beerbaum’s former top horse. Tomorrow, all horses will compete in the second qualifying round. The best 25 of each age group compete in the finals on Sunday, the other horses can jump the consolation round on Saturday.
