French Flavour for the Azkar Trophy

A final gallop to clock a time of 31.04 seconds gave the winner’s podium to Michel Robert of France in the Azkar Trophy, the third and last tour of the first day of the International Show Jumping Competition of La Coruna (CSI4*). The contest for the top finish was focused between two French riders.

Michel Hecart rode second, mounted on Itot Du Chateau, and enjoyed until the participation of Michel Robert what would have been his best-ever finish with a time of 31.66. Robert, winner of the Grand Prix CSI La Coruna 2001 and, hence, a well known figure locally, put more emotion into the event. Riding Koro D’Or, he turned in an insurmountable time for the rest of the riders. The French accent included nearly all riders of the lap of honour. The third and fourth placed finishers also ran under the French flag. Eugenie Angot and Eric Navet, who had the best time in the first round, completed their runs in 32.64 and 32.68 seconds respectively. Edwina Alexander (Isovlas Socrates) earned fifth place with a time of 39.95 seconds.

The highest ranking Spanish rider was Luis Jesus Escobar of Asturias riding Cairos de Croch, who gained sixth position with a time of 33.59 seconds. Following close behind was Manuel Fernandez Saro of Seville, riding Grandino 25 (35.15 seconds).

The final event of the first day of the International Jumping Competition of La Coruna was judged by the A scale with jump-off. After the first round in which 53 riders competed, 19 continued on to the jump-off. The first nine finishers did so without any fault, which was not the case for Beat Mändli of Switzerland, who, with a time of 31.1 seconds and one knock-down could have taken second position.

The other two winners of the day were Luis Sabino Gonçalves (POR) in the Mostoles Industrial Trophy and Franke Slootaak (GER) in the NH Hotels Trophy.
