Beerbaum best In Small Grand Prix in Verona

The coolest of clears sealed victory for Ludger Beerbaum in the SNAI Small Grand Prix at Jumping Verona International Horse Show this evening.

Riding Coleur Rubin the 45 year old German star set the target in the eight-horse jump-off with a quick but careful tour of the track, and the rest just couldn't match his class despite some brave and honest efforts.

The 12-fence first-round track proved plenty strong enough for many of the 38 starters, and there were some dramatic moments in the opening stages.

Belgium's Ludo Philippaerts will remember this competition for a while following a sensational recovery after his gelding, Top Gun, crash-landed at the last sending the rider shooting up to his ears. Luckily for Ludo however the ringside barrier brought the horse to a stop and he slid back into the saddle to gasps of amazement from the crowd.

French horseman extraordinaire, Michel Robert, got into an uncharacteristic muddle with Koro D'Or at the triple combination at eight which proved the bogey fence of the competition, and he retired as did Britain's Michael Whitaker with Suncal Portofino who looked a little uncomfortable after hitting the third fence.

First to go against the clock was the Netherlands' Albert Zoer who made a hairpin turn to the second fence with Sam. But the only remaining element of the dreaded triple hit the floor, and when he also lowered the final vertical his eight faults never looked like a winning score.Ludger on the other hand took a longer line to fence two, but in the smoothest of runs he steered his stallion like a cruise missile and Coleur Rubin slithered over the last with the clock showing 46.38 seconds.

Fellow-German, Toni Hassmann, hit the opening oxer with Queen Liesa but it was the Francesca Capponi the home crowd were waiting to see. The 20 year old has jumped into the headlines this week when showing sensational form with her big-jumping nine year old gelding Stallone. She has no experience at this level of the sport however and, in a moment of confusion when turning from the second element of the double to the now notorious vertical at eight she missed her line and wasted valuable time trying to find her course again. She jumped clear however, completing with a total of 23 time penalties and this looks a very promising combination.

Luciana Diniz was always going to be quick with the super-fast mare Suzie Quatro, but the Portuguese partnership arrived a long way off the final fence which fell as they raced through the finish almost two seconds up on the target time. This would prove good enough for second place when Germany's Max Kuhner and Acantus hit the penultimate oxer, Holland's Gerco Schroder and Eurcommerce Milano lowered the very first fence and Swizerland's Steve Guerdat picked up eight faults with Kador du Valon.

Ludger was well-pleased with Coleur Rubin who is going through a bit of a purple patch. “He was Leading Horse at the Global Champions Tour in Sao Paolo” he explained, “and although he is not the fastest horse in the world he is very consistent”. Ludger has been enjoying his week in Verona for another reason too – because his seven year old gelding son of Goldfever, Gotha, has been really coming into his own, placing in every class in which he has competed. “I am very excited about him. He competed in the Youngster Tour this season and was third in the final in Aachen and he has already done some 1.50m classes – he is definitely one for the future” he pointed out.
