Autumn MET 2017: Haranka, Ginger Ale and Kilbarron Rue best in the youngster finals

The Autumn MET 2017 is in its last week of competition, and today the 5, 6 and 7-year-old horses met for their respective finals presented by Kingsland Equestrian.

For the 5-year-old horses a total of 56 starters lined up for the final, with 21 of them clearing the first round over the 1.20m course set by today’s designer Franz Madl (AUT). In the end, it was Harold Megahey (IRL) on Haranka (Captain Cooper x F.A.G. De Crom) that took home the win with a time of 33,27 seconds in the jump-off. Brian Walker (CAN) and Cellestiano (Cellestial x Carrico) continued their consistency in Oliva, and finished as runners-up with a time of 33,68 seconds. Cassandra Orschel (POL) secured another good result, taking the third place on No Limit 69 (Nerrado x Quantum) with a time of 34,41 seconds in the jump-off. Fourth place went to Marco Antonio Merisio (ITA) on Ingrid (Hamlet x Doliart), while Santa Steinberga (LAT) on Bocca (Balous Bellini x Phantom) placed fifth with a time of 35,34 seconds.

The 6-year-old horses jumped a 1.30m track, and out of the 58 in the class a total of 18 pairs cleared their way to the jump-off. Fastest of them all was Vincent Voorn (NED) on Ginger Ale (Tyson x Tangelo van de Zuuthoeve), who snatched the win at the end of the class after clocking the winning time of 31,57 seconds leaving Katharina Offel (GER) and Gerton (Ukato x Lovefever II) to the runner-up position with their time of 31,77 seconds. Third spot went to Remy Ellis (GBR) on Good Friends (Mylord Carthago x New York) with a time of 33,14 seconds, while Kevin Gallagher (IRL) on Libido Van’T Hofken d’16 (Nabab de Reve x Heartbreaker) placed fourth and Margaux Rocuet (FRA) on Bonnie du Park (Kannan x Quidam de Revel) fifth.

Voorn is a regular in Oliva, and his winning partner Ginger Ale was actually discovered at the Spring MET earlier this year: “We bought Ginger Ale at the Tour here in January, and the horse has developed well and jumped good the whole summer,” Vincent commented. “I believe this horse has a lot of quality and the future looks bright for him.”

Voorn likes to stay outdoors with the young horses, and that is one of the reasons he chose to compete at the Autumn MET for another year: “I think it is nicer for the younger horses to stay outdoors as much as possible and have a shorter indoor season,” the Dutch rider explained. “The facilities here in Oliva Nova are super, and the organizers are constantly trying to improve and make everything nicer for the horses and riders. It is a pleasure to come here.”

44 horse-and-rider combinations lined up for the final for the 7-year-old horses, jumped over 1.40m fences. Eleven pairs cleared the first round and it was Kayleigh Watts (GBR) on Kilbarron Rue (Gelvin Clover x Barron de Chantepie) – second last to go in the jump-off – that gave it their best shot and took home the win with a time of 42,32 seconds pushing Michael Duffy (IRL) on Au Top des Luthiers (Quaprice Boimargot x Voltaire) down to the runner-up position. Adrienne Dixon (USA) on Killossery Kaiden (Lux Z x Cruising) took the third spot with a time of 43,39 seconds, Santa Steinberga (LAT) on Calola (Caretello B x Lancer III) placed fourth with a time of 43,65 seconds and the fifth spot went to Ferenc Szertirmai (UKR) on Key To President (President x Caesar van de Helle) after the pair clocked a time of 45,75 seconds.

The Autumn MET 2017 concludes on Sunday with the last CSI2* Grand Prix of this year’s circuit of the Mediterranean Equestrian Tour.
